New immigration fees from 18 March 2016

26 February 2016

Further to our news item on 13 January, the Immigration and Nationality (Fees) Regulations 2016 (SI 2016/266) were laid before Parliament today.

Contrary to previous years, the fee increases will come into effect on 18 March 2016, not in April.  There have also been a number of changes to the new fees since the proposed fees were announced last month.  Most notably, the £200 ‘SELT fee’ has not been included in the 2016 regulations; the fee for an administrative review remains at £80 and the ‘user pays fee’ for entry clearance applications has been reduced to £55.

There are three new in-country fees that may be of interest to Tier 4 applicants:

  • A premium postal service (£375).  As we explain in our information for students, this is already being trialed at a small number of institutions;
  • An in-country 'user pays' fee (£55);
  • A 'mobile premium service centre' fee (£5000)

At present we have no further information about the latter two services, including which immigration categories they will be open to and when they will become available.

The table below contains a list of the fees of most relevance to students, where the fee will change on 18 March 2016. See the Home Office website for the full list.
