COVID-19: Updated guidance on further visa extensions

22 May 2020

The Home Office has today updated its guidance for those with immigration permission who are unable to return overseas as a result of coronavirus:

The provision that allows people whose leave expires between 24 January 2020 and 31 May 2020 to get a free extension until 31 May 2020 will continue for longer. Under it, people whose leave expires between 24 January 2020 and 31 July 2020 will be allowed to get a free extension, until 31 July 2020 (please see the guidance for further details on how to get this free extension).

The provision that allows people to apply for extensions in the UK when that would not normally be possible is also continuing for longer. Previously this only helped people with leave expiring between 24 January 2020 and 31 May 2020. Now it helps people with leave expiring between 24 January 2020 and 31 July 2020. For an explanation of this particular provision, see our page Coronavirus Covid 19: information for international students. The requirements of the immigration route still need to be met, but it does mean that applications that would usually need to be made from outside of the UK, can be made from within the UK.
