Find a category for HE England

There are lots of ‘categories’ of student who can insist on paying ‘home’ fees. However, some categories are used by many more people than others.  

For these popular categories, we provide below some examples of students who might fit them. We describe an imaginary student’s circumstances and then tell you what category they might fit. If you look like one of them, it might help you find a category you fit more quickly (without having to go through the whole list of categories).  

Remember to go and check all the detailed requirements for the category suggested, as you need to make sure you meet every single requirement listed for that category.  

Categories that have the word ‘family’ in the title usually cover some children as well as spouses or civil partners. Look at the detailed requirements for the category to find out about that, they might not be given as the example.  

If you don’t resemble any of these examples, don’t worry. Read our complete list of categories for HE in England, instead. It lists every category, including ones that are used more rarely (such as the ones that relate to Gibraltar, the British Overseas Territories, British Citizens of Chagossian descent, stateless leave, section 67 leave, Calais leave, indefinite leave as a victim of domestic violence or abuse, and bereaved partners).  

The examples given are of just one student who might fit the category. There will be thousands of students who also fit the category but don’t look anything like the student in the example.
