#WeAreInternational Awards winners 2025
Introducing the #WeAreInternational Awards 2025 winners. 13 students, staff and institutions have been announced as winners of this year’s awards, celebrating their contributions to deliver a world-class international student experience in the UK.
These winners were shortlisted from over 420 entries from over 120 institutions across the UK, selected from 63 finalists and chosen by expert judges:
International student awards
Student of the Year Award
Winner: Ramitha Nittore Ramnath, University of Chester

Ramitha, a second-year international Psychology student, has made an exceptional contribution to student life, community wellbeing, and cross-cultural inclusion.
As President of the Indian Society, they led cultural and wellbeing initiatives in collaboration with the Students’ Union and university departments. In their role as Assistant Hindu Chaplain, they further focused on student wellbeing, launching six themed tea parties as part of the university’s wellbeing programme. They have also supported student voice initiatives, ensuring feedback informed wider university policies.
Student Leader of the Year Award
Winner: Muhammed Hafiz (known as Hafiz), University of Northampton

Hafiz, serves as Vice President of Education at Northampton Students’ Union, where he is a valued and impactful member of the Student Engagement and Full-Time Officer team.
He has made a deep impact through his leadership in several ways, from improving the experience of Personal Academic Tutors to shaping employability workshops to be responsive to diverse student needs. He has been a consistent and constructive presence in student roundtables with senior University staff, representing Northampton Students’ Union with integrity and clarity. His advocacy has ensured that the voices of students are embedded in key discussions and decision-making processes.
Alum of the Year Award
Winner: Hammed Alabi, The University of Edinburgh
After graduating from The University of Edinburgh in 2021, Hammed has been leading transformative work in the UK, from mentoring refugees to designing life-skills programmes for asylum seekers. He now works at The University of Edinburgh supporting Mastercard Foundation Scholars in their transitions after graduation.
His leadership initiative, KLCI, has trained over 10,000 young people across Africa. He recently co-founded Rafiki AI, Africa’s first generative AI career adviser for displaced youth.
Community Impact Award
Winner: Gowri Promy, Queen Mary University of London
Gowri is an international student at Queen Mary University of London. She has made outstanding contributions to the East London community through her tireless volunteer work, resilience, and commitment to social justice.
As President of QMUL’s Lawyers Without Borders, she has transformed the society into a platform that not only educates students about human rights, but actively connects them with local initiatives, charities, and global advocacy networks
Global Community Award
Winner: Life of Impact Volunteering Initiative, The University of Edinburgh
The Life of Impact Volunteering Initiative at The University of Edinburgh is an innovative, student-led response to global and local challenges—powered by 75 Africa-based online students. Between January and July 2024, this community led local volunteer projects across 10 African countries, the UK, USA, and Canada.
These impactful community projects resulted in 1,200+ hours of volunteering, impacting more than 3,000 lives. The initiative has strengthened the University of Edinburgh’s international online student community, raised awareness about the potential of online students to lead social change, and enriched the university’s reputation for inclusive, global engagement.

Institution of the Year Award
Winner: University of Warwick

Warwick’s 60th anniversary was marked by a bold, student-focused international strategy that focused on global engagement and student experience. Its associated One World Warwick campaign reached over 5,500 participants across 23 countries and awarded nearly £1 million in scholarships to students from 33 nationalities.
The University of Warwick supports over 9,500 students from 147 countries through initiatives that promote academic and social success, building an inclusive global community that truly aligns with UKCISA’s Student Charter.
In 2024–25, it launched the International Student Experience Advisory Board, co-chaired by an international student to strengthen cross-campus collaboration and ensure that international students’ perspectives and voices are heard in decision making.
The University of Warwick has truly demonstrated its commitment to support international student inclusion.
Staff of the Year Award
Winner: Dr Marcel Clusa, Bangor University
Dr Marcel’s work has been celebrated for reflecting a deep, holistic, and innovative commitment to ensuring every international student feels supported, valued, and empowered to thrive.
He is the first point of contact for complex immigration advice and critical welfare support and provides both technical expertise and emotional reassurance. Dr Marcel transforms the daunting transition to UK life into a welcoming and enriching experience. From coordinating airport pickups and orientation to organising events that fight isolation and promote cultural immersion, he ensures no student feels alone.
Alastair Niven Student Voice Champion Award
Winner: Andrew Howells, NCUK
Andrew has shown exceptional dedication to empowering international student voices in institutional strategies and global campaigns. From supporting #WeAreInternational in his role at UUKi to developing a #WeAreTogether campaign during Covid-19 to help prospective international students continue with their plans to study in the UK.
Most recently, as Chief Marketing Officer at NCUK, he’s driven a transformative brand campaign by engaging international students from 40 countries and over 120 nationalities to help thousands more students to fulfil their dreams of studying abroad.
Andrew’s work has empowered international students to influence institutional policies, enhanced global access to UK higher education, and fostered inclusive environments.
Outstanding Student Support Award (Visas and immigration)
Winner: Visa & International Support Team, Foundation for International Education

The Visa & International Support Team at the Foundation for International Education delivers a comprehensive, accessible, and personalised immigration support service that ensures students feel informed, confident, and cared for throughout their journey to the UK.
The service includes clear, tailored immigration guides that are regularly updated. Students only receive the information that is directly relevant to their situation, reducing confusion and empowering them to navigate the immigration process with confidence.
Beyond this, the team supports students in a crisis, working directly with UKVI on batch corrections in response to systemic visa errors, relieving individual students from a complex and stressful process.
Outstanding Student Support Award (Academic experience)
Winner: English Conversation Cafés Team, University of Reading
English Conversation Cafés at the University of Reading support international students with academic transition and integration into higher education in the UK. They offer opportunities to practice spoken English in a psychologically safe space, essential for developing fluency and engagement. The programme was co-created by 30+ collaborators across academic departments, support services, Students’ Union, museums, student societies, and external partners like Citizens UK.
These bi-weekly online and in-person peer-led sessions complement formal academic provision by building confidence, fostering communication skills, and deepening students’ understanding of UK academic culture.
Outstanding Student Support Award (Making a home in the UK)
Winner: International Student Support Team, University of Sunderland in London
The International Student Support Team at the University of Sunderland in London delivered a comprehensive programme for its 1,500+ Nepali student community, to help them feel supported, empowered, and engaged with university life – and, most importantly of all, feel at home in the UK. The team were proactive; from travelling to Nepal to meet with students and families to understand expectations and fears to creating a Nepali Student Support Group, designed to help students integrate academically, socially and emotionally.
The programme has led to a profound cultural shift on campus with Nepali students truly engaged with UK life and the broader student community. Earlier this year, in an ultimate example of the exceptional level of integration and belonging, a Nepali student was elected as Students’ Union President - a first for the university.
Outstanding Student Support Award (Careers and employability)
Winner: Careers & Experience Service, Coventry University London
Coventry University London’s Careers and Experience Service and Employer Engagement Team has transformed the employability journey of international postgraduate students, embedding work experience opportunities at scale. From running structured three-month employability support packages, with real time support for CV reviews, application guidance and interview preparation with careers professionals, to building strong relationships with employers and securing ring-fenced roles for exclusively for their students.
Over the past two years, it has achieved a 100% work experience rate for its postgraduate international student cohorts, supporting more than 2,000 students into meaningful work experiences.
Outstanding Student Support Award (Physical and mental wellbeing)
Winner: The Student Experience & Wellbeing Team, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
The Student Experience & Wellbeing Team at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has created a proactive, inclusive support model rooted in research, data, and compassion for their uniquely diverse student body - around 50% of students are from sub-Saharan Africa or South Asia.
From early wellbeing support to phased inductions and support for late arrivals, the team has created a welcoming, resilient, and supportive postgraduate environment. Their innovative, research-informed work ensures every student is empowered to succeed -personally, socially, and academically.
