Update for students on Home Office texts and emails about immigration status
September 25, 2025
We recently released a statement on the government’s announcement warning students not to overstay their Student visas.
In line with this, you may be due to receive, or have already received, a text message and/or email from the Home Office concerning your immigration status, warning you that your immigration status is about to expire. Don’t be alarmed if you receive this communication.
If you’re unsure as to whether or not this communication is genuine, or if you are concerned about your immigration status and whether this applies to you, speak to an international student adviser at your institution.
We have sought clarity from UKVI about the likely content of this communication and, importantly, the details of the sender. We have provided advice about this to educational institutions that are UKCISA members. Your institution may be able to check that any communication you have received is likely to be from the Home Office and resembles what, we understand from UKVI, it is sending out. Alternatively, you can call us on our student advice line for further reassurance.
We have also included information on UKCISA’s Frauds and scams webpage providing further advice on these Home Office notifications, including tips on how to recognise a fraudulent communication.
