New International Education Strategy renews UK commitment to welcome international students
January 20, 2026
UKCISA welcomes the publication of the UK government's International Education Strategy 2026 and its renewed commitment to a strong welcome for international students. Placing student experience, quality outcomes, and responsible recruitment at the heart of the strategy is the right approach for sustainable growth. When international students feel supported, valued, and able to thrive, it strengthens trust in the UK as a study destination.
We are pleased to see the direct inclusion of students’ voices, amplified by our #WeAreInternational Student Ambassador Nebu George. His account of feeling that his contribution is welcomed, and that his voice is heard, is a powerful reminder of what underpins a high-quality student experience.
While the Strategy focuses on international expansion of UK education, it rightly identifies the practical foundations of a high-quality student experience, from support services to infrastructure and housing. UKCISA is well placed and ready to support the government and the sector to deliver on these priorities. Our #WeAreInternational Student Charter provides a clear, student-informed framework that can help translate ambition into practice.
UKCISA will be seeking feedback from members and international students on the likely impacts to inform our advocacy to government and our work with sector colleagues. We will continue to work with members and international students to bring their insight and lived experience into our engagement with government as the strategy is implemented.
