Keeping Healthy at Christmas and what to do if you get unwell in the UK
December 17, 2025
Spending Christmas in the UK if you are an international student can often be a time of mixed emotions, for some, feelings of loneliness and homesickness may creep in and for others the prospect of enjoying the festivities and celebrating with new friends make it an exciting time resulting in memories which last a life time.
Staying healthy is a key part of making sure the memories which are made are happy ones! So here are some tips to help you keep on top form throughout the holidays.
Exercise
The end of term brings the opportunity for some much-needed rest and relaxation; however, too much bed rotting may not be the best way to rejuvenate. Instead why not try some home workouts couchtofitnesschristmas is one of many programmes which don’t need gym attendance or expensive fees.
Christmas day itself can be an opportunity to meet new friends Parkrun has events taking place all over the UK parkrunXmas, catering to people of all ages and fitness levels (and you don’t need to run!). For those willing to embrace the chill festive swims are now popular outdoorswimmingsocietyfestive-swims-list some events need to be booked in advance and there may be a small fee.
Eating and Drinking
The Christmas holiday can be a fabulous opportunity to socialise with other students over a meal, and it does not need to involve spending a lot of money. Asking everyone to contribute a dish it a fantastic way to enjoy a variety of food which is affordable for everyone.
When shopping remember that street markets are often a good choice for fruit and vegetable and that budget supermarkets exist in most UK high streets. Keep an eye out for ‘Yellow Sticker’ items which are often fabulous bargains, just be careful of expiry dates and make sure you use in time. If you are the host, make sure that there is a choice of soft and alcoholic drinks and as always, don’t overdo the latter!
Health Services
All UK health services including GPs, Dentists and Pharmacies will operate reduced hours throughout the Christmas and New Year period; therefore, planning is important.
If you take prescribed medication, make sure you have enough to last through until January including contraceptive pills. It is also a good idea to buy a small stock of ‘over the counter’ medication such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen just in case you become unwell with minor ailments such as colds or sore throats, a common experience during the UK winter!
For urgent problems, including acute toothache use 111.nhs.uk if you experience an emergency call 999 or visit your nearest A+ E department.
