SU Sabbatical Officers: Navigating the immigration Rules and guidance

  • Location:Zoom
  • Date:11/06/2026
  • Time:10:00 am
  • Time:2 hours

The Student route is part of the points-based visa system specifically for international students who want to study in the UK. It is also the route that is used for those who want to undertake a Student Union Sabbatical Officer role. This training course offers UKCISA members a general overview of how the Student immigration route can be used by those undertaking such a role.

This webinar will help you to:

  • Know where to locate the Rules and guidance on provisions relating to Student Union Sabbatical Officers

  • Know the discrepancies between permission based on a CAS issued specifically as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer and a CAS issued for studying, including what work and study they can and can’t do

  • Consider the options (under the immigration Rules) of continuing to study or continuing as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer where current permission is coming to an end.

This webinar can be taken stand-alone or in conjunction with the Student route essentials series, to develop your knowledge on specific requirements.

Who should attend?

This course is for staff who have some basic knowledge of the  Student route. It will likely be most relevant to those involved in advising individuals about applying for permission as Student Union Sabbatical Officers under the Student route, and/or assessing details associated with a Student's CAS as part of their institution’s sponsor duties.

Suitable for: international student advisers; student advisers; compliance roles; admissions roles

Minimum experience level: foundational knowledge of the Student route (no prior UKCISA training expected)

Our training is grounded in the principles of the #WeAreInternational Student Charter, a student-led document that provides guidance on delivering a world-class international student experience, from pre-arrival to post-graduation.
