UKCISA awards over £28k in funding to outstanding projects and research initiatives

05 April 2023

UKCISA’s #WeAreInternational Grants scheme has invested over £28,000 in funds to eight innovative projects and research initiatives led by member institutions.

Following on from the launch of the #WeAreInternational Student Charter in June 2022, the Grants scheme aims to compliment the translation of the principles contained within into practical application. The projects and research initiatives submitted were selected by a panel made up of UKCISA staff, #WeAreInternational Student Ambassadors and members of UKCISA’s Board of Trustees.

Funding was awarded to applications that showed innovation, addressed at least one principle of the #WeAreInternational Student Charter and will involve international students in the work. It is hoped that the projects and research will fill a gap in the sector’s understanding or address challenges faced, and will contribute to the international student experience.

UKCISA has awarded grants to the following projects and research:

  • Toolkit for international students travelling with dependants (project, Liverpool John Moores University).
  • International talent symposium: A regional approach to employer and student engagement (project, University of Stirling).
  • Democratising assessment rubrics: Making assessment rubrics more accessible for international students (project, Kings College London).
  • Beyond cultural differences: Critical intercultural orientation workshops for international and home students (project, Newcastle University).
  • Enhancing the career prospects of international students through targeted pre- and post-enrolment opportunities (project, Swansea University).
  • Exploring opportunities and challenges to international students’ sense of belonging and inclusion in the UK (research, University of Nottingham and International Students House).
  • Supporting international students fleeing humanitarian crisis: Untangling the experiences of students from Ukraine and Syria (research, Keele University and Dean Clough Galleries).
  • Voices of international scholars on intercultural perspectives: A systematic review of doctoral theses in the UK (research, University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh).

Outcomes from the project and research initiatives will be shared with the sector upon publication in summer 2024 to ensure best practices can be implemented across the sector.
