Note: totals differ due to rounding within the HESA data.

1. International student totals and percentages

In UK HE in 2009-10 international (non-UK) students:

  • totalled 405,810 compared with 368,970 in 2008-09 (an increase of 10%), with full-time taught postgraduate programmes up 15%, full-time undergraduate study up 11% but only 2% growth in research postgraduate numbers
  • made up 13% of full-time first degree students and 12% of all first degree students
  • made up 68% of full-time taught postgraduates and 44% of all taught postgraduates
  • made up 49% of full-time research degree students and 42% of all research postgraduates
