With effect from 1 July 2017, Syrians admitted to the UK under the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS) and the Vulnerable Children's Resettlement Scheme (VCRS) will be granted refugee status instead of humanitarian protection.
Those resettled under either of these programmes before 1 July 2017 will be given the opportunity to request that their humanitarian protection be changed to refugee status.
This is something that Refugee Council, ILPA, Coram Children's Legal Centre, NUS and UKCISA worked on together.
This is very welcome news. Once implemented, it means that those granted refugee status would be able to access Student Support for their higher education courses in any UK country without having to meet any requirement to have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for 3 years.
