Academic life and what students need to do in order to be successful in their studies can vary from one country to another. International students with plans to study in the UK may find the Prepare for Success website a useful place to start finding out how things work in UK universities and colleges.
Prepare for Success is a unique website that provides free learning resources to help international students explore different aspects of academic life in the UK and find out what skills are needed for effective study. The learning activities include all key skills areas (academic reading and writing; listening and speaking) and provide the opportunity to practise some of these skills. The website resources are also widely used by teachers in the UK and overseas to prepare students pre-departure and for post-arrival induction at their university or college.
Supported with funding from UKCISA, Prepare for Success was developed by the elanguages team at the University of Southampton. Since its launch in 2008, the website and its resources have been used by students in 227 countries and this month the website reached the incredible milestone of one million visits!
Recently, we have added a Prepare for Success blog in order to answer more of the typical questions that international students have asked us. In addition, there is a choice of study pathways through the resources (for example, students can select all listening content, or select all learning activities about academic writing), an interactive Frequently Asked Questions page, and questions and answers about study in Further Education.
Whether you are just starting to think about future studies in the UK (or know someone who is) or have already arrived and begun a university or college course, Prepare for Success is well worth a visit!
Many thanks to this month's guest blogger Julie Watson SFHEA, Head of eLanguages and Principal Teaching Fellow in eLearning at the University of Southampton.
