Basic advisory skills for those working with international students

This course focuses on issues relevant for those who are new to advising international students and offers an introduction to the tools and skills needed to do the job effectively.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • identify the main objectives of the advice process
  • identify the key stages of the advice process
  • define their role and its boundaries
  • locate useful resources and sources of support
  • revise and/or devise administrative processes required when advising international students
  • understand how to develop their interviewing skills

This course is suitable for:

anyone who provides advice to international students. This includes staff who have recently taken the role of advising international students as well as more experienced staff who wish to consolidate their experience. Please note that this course does not cover specific advice areas such as immigration or fee status.
