Prime Minister’s Initiative for International Education (PMI) Showcase

Time Event
9.30-11.30 P.1 Prepare for success: an interactive learning resource for international students before they arrive in the UK
This session will introduce and demonstrate Prepare for Success, a new resource designed to help international students prepare for university study in the UK before they arrive. This PMI-funded development project provides a free resource which can be used to enhance your institution’s pre-arrival support package for international students. By engaging with the multimedia learning resources students discover what British academic culture is like and what kind of academic skills they will need for effective study. The resource also provides considerable scope for language improvement.

Presenter: Julie Watson, University of Southampton

P.2 Engaging international students on money management: an interactive workshop based on the International Student Calculator
This interactive workshop will introduce ideas and tools to help you address student finance in a holistic and engaging way. There will be a showcase of the PMI-funded International Student Calculator, which has been developed by UNIAID in partnership with UKCISA. This online lifestyle calculator aims to help students plan and manage their finances for study in the UK. The session will outline its key features and discuss how it can be used. Delegates will also have the opportunity to play the UNIAID MASH Game; a resource which is great for teambuilding and bringing personal finance alive.

Presenter: Jemma Samuels, UNIAID Manager
Presentation

P3 Volunteering programmes for international students
International students who get involved in volunteering often find it a highlight of their stay, building their skills and confidence, giving them experience of British life outside the college/university, and allowing them to “give something back” to the community. This session will showcase ideas from UKCISA’s new guide to running volunteering programmes, suggesting a range of models to try in your institution.

Presenter: Caro Hart, independent consultant/former Chief Executive, HOST UK

P4 International students and mentoring: pilot project success and new guide launch
Mentoring is generally accepted to be a powerful tool for helping people through difficult situations and periods of transition. It is increasingly being used in the education sector to help new students adjust to and feel fully a part of their new student community on campus (socially as well as academically), and their local community, as well as their individual departments or faculties. This session focuses on a pilot project undertaken by the University of Plymouth to provide mentoring to direct entry students and will address lessons learnt and challenges overcome in setting up a mentoring scheme. A new UKCISA practical guide on setting up mentoring schemes for international students will also be launched.

Presenters: Rong Huang, International Student Tutor, University of Plymouth and Celia Partridge, PMI Projects Development Manager, UKCISA
Presentation

P5 Bridging Our Worlds DVD: a new training resource
There is nothing more powerful than students talking frankly about their experiences, yet using students in training sessions can present difficulties. In 2007 Colin Lago and Alison Barty were commissioned by UKCISA to produce a training DVD to develop cultural awareness in staff working with international students, which was previewed at the 2007 UKCISA Conference. This presentation/workshop will be an interactive session for those interested in cultural awareness training and in particular using student voices, with training suggestions and applications using the DVD.

Presenter: Alison Barty, Senior Student Counsellor, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

P6 International comparisons: lessons from overseas study visits
The aim of PMI-funded overseas study visits scheme was to identify relevant aspects of policy and best practice in institutions in key competitor countries overseas. Members of international student support staff from across the UK visited institutions in Australia, America, New Zealand and the Netherlands, and three of those who went on the visits will discuss their experiences, present their findings and examine what the UK can learn from institutions overseas.

Presenters: Rosemary Gibson, Senior International Officer, University of Nottingham and Alana Holland, International Student Advisor, University of Surrey
